Population Council Research that makes a difference

Among many forms of violence against women and girls, sexual violence poses significant risks to health, including physical injuries, psychological trauma, unwanted pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is not only a rights abuse but a public health concern in every country. The greatest risk of such violence is from men women and girls know—often husbands or male family members—yet addressing domestic violence remains a relatively ignored and obscured issue in most developing countries.

Population Council focus

The Council addresses SGBV by understanding its causes and consequences, then strengthening health and other services that respond to survivors, as well as supporting and evaluating preventive efforts.

Population Council impact

  • The Council supports and coordinates a network of more than 20 partners strengthening SGBV services in nine African countries. Research by members of the network develops, tests, and evaluates medical and legal service delivery and provides regional technical assistance in strengthening nascent policies and programs in each country.
  • In South Africa, the Council collaborated with the Free State Province Department of Health to convene the country’s first national symposium on child sexual assault.
  • Council technical assistance to Vietnam’s Hanoi Health Department is helping develop and introduce a tool to aid health workers in screening for domestic violence and supporting survivors with service provision or referral.
  • In India, the Council adapted Promundo’s “Program H,” successfully developed in Brazil, to reduce partner violence by young men; after the intervention participants reported less support for inequitable gender norms, and self-reported violence against partners declined in the intervention sites.
